I have come to discover that the Detroit airport is only mildly amusing.
I have apparently arrived at “The Good Terminal”, which was nice to learn, as I’ve heard nothing but crap reviews of this place. This, being “The Good Terminal”, has quite a few bonus features that the other (The Bad Terminal) does not. Such features include (but are not limited to): Paint on the walls, carpeting, breathable air, seats, and one hell of a monorail-like-thing. The entire terminal spans probably 1/3 of a mile, so to assist in the transportation, NWA (no, not the rap group) has installed a tram/monorail/L-train that run the entire course of the building. Excellent, says I, for this will be perfect airport fodder!
Turns out that no matter how many beers you consume, the ride is lackluster at best. Sure, there’s the fun of wooshing by the common folk, laughing, as they trudge about on their “Good Terminal” toils, but something is missing. Maybe it’s the fact that the train only has a limited speed on a very limited distance, maybe I just need more beer inside me.
There is a fun little fountain that marks the center of the terminal. It’s one of those jet-powered fountains like you see at Epcot that shoots bursts of water all over the place. It’s even more fun to watch some wandering child try to “catch” the water, only to get a face full of super-chlorinated water which I’m sure will develop into a nice cancer when the kid turns 50.
The good news is that this airport has free wifi, and a ton of people-movers. Bad news is that it’s Detroit.
On to Amsterdam! Good Beer! Stroopwafels! Huzzah!
