Gone Bamboo

Something strange has happened.

I’ve become used to Mumbai. I can’t describe it, but I feel the *connection* to this city. I know it hasn’t even been 2 weeks, but I feel like I know this city now. The cab rides are no longer exciting and thrilling. I can cross the busy roads without having to worry about whizzing traffic. The contradictions no longer contradict. I feel confident walking the streets of the neighborhood I live in.

In fact, I even had to tell my cab driver how to get to my hotel when he got lost. Honestly. Either I’ve become a lot more aware of this city, or I had a really bad driver. Or both.

I’m sorry I haven’t posted any new and exciting posts lately. I’ve been really busy working 12-14 hours days, only to crash at the hotel and sleep for the remaining time left. I will say that everyone the in the class recovered from the food illness, and that I am still finding joy in every day spent in this magnificent country.

I do want to say hello and THANKS to everyone who is reading these (awful) posts and using the comments. It’s your comments that give me something to look forward to when I come back to the hotel. My only request: LEAVE MORE COMMENTS! :-)

Today I’ve been told that I’m going to partake in a treat for lunch. The treat I’m promised is named: The India Burger. Oh boy. Gastrointestinal stories will ensure, I’m sure.

I’ve gotta say this is probably the only blog I check more than once a day. I think I got hooked after reading your arrival post…your depth of description for your surroundings reminded me of reading some William Gibson books (’sodium lamps cast orange shadows across buildings…’) It’s good stuff, and considering how I’ve run out of stuff to look at online, new content is more than welcome.

My only request is – more pictures! I don’t care if they aren’t cropped or color corrected or whatever. I’m just dying to see more – the architecture, the streets, the shops and people. Watching Piven’s special in HD is one thing, but seeing photos from someone I know is a whole different experience. Of course, 12-14 hour days in an office probably limit your photo ops, so I understand.

Just FYI – I directed Claire to this masterpiece of a blog. She’s going to be travelling to India for a month, so I figured your blog is better than some tourist website.

OK I will, though Matt already commented and told you why I’m even reading this.

I’m going to India in a month for a month, and your blog is giving me a good taste of what it will be like. Although I won’t be training techs for 14 hours a day. I’ll just be being a tourist.

Keep writing! I’d like to read your bog even if I wasn’t going to India.

I used to go to your website way a long time ago when you had a webcam in your dorm room at UNCA, and I was interested in UNCA, and now I can read your blog because I’m interested in India.

ps. I’m with Matt–more pictures please!

Ok! I will take the camera to work and take more outside shots if I can. Travelling through Mumbai has become so common now, that I almost forget where I am and to take pictures.

In fact, I’m going to take some pictures right now. I can’t take any outside shots as it’s 4 in the morning, but I’ll do something!

oh come on…it can’t be that dark at 4am. just go for iso1600, f2.8, and 30sec exposure and you are bound to pick up something interesting. ;)

i’ve been meaning to ask – how’s the view of the night sky there? much light pollution or clear view of the stars?

  5. bugbbq says:

first: my lens don’t do 2.8, buddy. iso1600 is pointless if you’re going to do a long exposure. you want it at the lowest iso for that.

second: no. you can’t see ANYTHING in the night sky here. lots of humidity + light pollution (this is a city with the same population as NYC, but half the area). Oh well.
