Mumbai Hustle

I have more pictures to share! But first, an update:

Americans are boring. Yeah, I said it. We’re really, really boring people. If there’s one thing that I’ve learned so far on my trip here, it’s that Americans really need to spice things up. Literally. For example, the food. Even the simplest thing has a metric assload of flavor to it. Today me, my fellow American trainer, and a Indian friend of ours took us on a tour of the city. We started off at a little hole-in-the-wall cafe, had the most amazing squid and fish meal I’ve EVER had, and went off looking for electronic gadgets in the Bandra district. When I say this meal was amazing, I mean it. I really enjoy squid, and this goes beyond the level of enjoyment. This was no Olive-Garden-too-much-lemon-and-batter calamari, but an orgasmic plate of lightly fried squid pieces with red pepper and sauteed onions and enough spices to put Col. Sanders to shame. Price? 85 rupees ($1.50). Cheap food, BIG flavor. Good luck finding that combination at your local D.U.I.Fridays. I’m beginning to see how ex-patriots can put the “ex” in front of their name. Ate dinner at an Afghani place, and had the usual fare of kebabs, naan, and flavorful dipping spices. Again, every bite bursting with spice and tradition.

I feel that when I get back to America, I’m going to die of taste boredom.

And no, I didn’t find any good electronic gadgets. I was looking at a wide variety of cell phones (the kind you can’t get in America), but the prices were a bit high. 10,000 to 25,000 rupees for the cool stuff (200-500 bucks). Funk dat!

Ok, enough words, on with the pictures:

The Gateway to India.

An Aquarium further down Marine Drive. By the looks of things, I don’t think it’s new.

More of that wonderful “Horn OK Please” stuff. It’s my goal to take as many pictures of this phrase as possible.

Man, I can’t WAIT to catch this!

More Bombay Driving Excitement.

Oh man, I have to get these guys to decorate my next place.

A great dive right across the street from work. DAMN tasty prawns masala.

Apparently Xeroxing is VERY important to the Mumbai culture, because there are places like this on EVERY block. I’m a little concerned by the picture directly below the xerox sign. I’m not quite sure that’s how we xerox back at home.

A shot of the famous Marine Plaza Hotel rooftop pool. Marvel in its un-safeness!

The next shots are of today’s shopping adventures. Instead of ruining them with comments, I’m going to just post them and allow others to comment on them:

Ok, I’m going to comment on this one. You HAVE to laugh at the poor choice of phone numbering for McD’s delivery.

Yes, this is another shot of our car in the TOTALLY wrong lane. This used to scare the bejeezus out of me, but now it’s a daily occurance. Ho-hum.

There are TONS of Skoda Automobiles here. VW/Audi fans rejoice!

And this was the nice neighborhood!

Random cow shot. The bovine and owner were walking the street together and the local restaurant owner brought out some bread for the beast. I must admit, the big fella looked really tasty. Mmmm….sacrilicious!

Stay tuned for more!

    Zach,
I continue to enjoy your adventure through India. We were gone last week so had a week of catching up to do. The food sounds the best, except for those pesky little bugs churning up the stomach. Glad you didn’t get sick. The pictures are great, but I love the narrative best.

    Awesome pics man!

One thing I’ve noticed from them all, the staight ahead shots from the cabs don’t look too bad. It appears to be just any other big city. It’s when you take the shots up and you actually see the buildings and the surrounds as a whole that you realize where you are and how different things are.

    Glad to see you’re surviving!
